Since I’ve referenced some diabetic terms without explaining them I figured I’d put up my quick definitions, in plain english…
So… here’s the 411:
Blood Sugar Level: This is the level us diabetics live by. It’s what we check 4 to 8 times a day. It’s the level of “sugar” in our blood. A normal person’s bs level is usually between 90 and 110. The pancreas produces insulin and disperses it when needed to keep the levels in check. In T1 diabetics it’s up to our insulin injections and quick math skills to figure out how much insulin we need to offset the food we eat, the mood we’re in, the exercise we’ve done, or the stress we’re under.
Going Low – a.k.a. hypoglycemia – this is when your blood sugar drops below a certain threshold, usually about 70. Feels like you’re gonna pass out.
Going High – or just “high” – a.k.a. hyperglycemia – this is when your blood sugar goes above certain threshold, usually about 200. Feels like you’re really confused, foggy, and well, for those that understand, high.
A1C - a.k.a. Hemoglobin A1c – this is blood test of your ‘average’ blood sugar levels over the previous 3 months. When your A1c is under 7.0 – you’re said to be “in control” of your dibetes.
